If only the craftsmanship in that component had been brought to support on this film. Writer/director Nancy Meyers ("Something's Gotta Give," "The Holiday") never pushes for a strong correctness when she can impress for an amenable laugh. She's equal an industrial device, stamping out 100 percent pure-plastic midlife female fantasy. Jane, an idealized fiftysomething, lives in a splendid wild nest. Long divorced from Jake (Alec Baldwin, with a crude coruscating in his eye), she's sending their youngest off to college.

It looks as if place repair projects and chablis with the girls is her lot in the gold years ahead. When she and Jake on a short fuse paths at a garden shindy and sink into a reasonable rapport, each feels a forgotten spark. So the entanglements begin. As promised, it gets complicated, with a series of heedful hookups concealed from the Adlers' distrustful kids, and Jake's novel wife, Agness (Lake Bell), a hard-bodied green nuisance.
